Submit to The BIPOCAC Chronicle

The BIPOCAC Chronicle is a peer-reviewed online publication committed to making timely writing about BIPOC communities and academia accessible to the public.

We recognize that higher education, as a public institution, has an ethical responsibility to all of its stakeholders. Meaningful change requires sustained and public discussion of racism in academia. The Chronicle provides a space for these conversations, particularly those that challenge the ways racism is understood, experienced, and addressed within higher education.

What Can I Submit?

We welcome submissions that broadly engage with racism in academia and higher education. Contributions may take many forms, including:

  • Opinion and commentary pieces
  • Research and scholarly writing
  • Book reviews
  • Reflections and personal essays
  • Creative writing
  • Poetry
  • Other forms of writing that contribute to conversations about racism in academia

While the BIPOCAC Chronicle is based in Canada, international submissions are strongly encouraged. We welcome perspectives that help us understand how racism in academia operates across different geographical, cultural, and institutional contexts.

Our Approach to Writing

Submissions should be no more than 1,500 words and written in accessible language.

We are not asking contributors to conform to normalized “professional” writing standards shaped by an overwhelmingly White publishing industry. Contributors should not feel that their writing needs to be written primarily for a White audience, unless that is the author’s intention.

We encourage writers to approach their work in ways that reflect their own voices, experiences, communities, and ways of communicating. For example, contributors do not need to continually explain or justify the reality of racism in academia. Experiences and realities that have long been recognized by BIPOC communities can be stated as such, without repeatedly establishing their legitimacy for readers who may be unfamiliar with them.

The authenticity of the author’s voice is valued.

Language

Submissions are currently accepted in English and French. We recognize that cultural and linguistic differences shape how people communicate in both languages, and we welcome that diversity in submissions.

Author Biography

Please include a brief biography of no more than 200 characters with your submission.

If your submission is accepted, you will be asked to provide an image of your choice to accompany your biography. This may be a photograph, avatar, illustration, or another image that represents you.

We especially encourage undergraduate students and emerging academics to submit. If you are an undergraduate student, please identify yourself as such in your biography.

Where to Send Your Submission

Please send your submission to bipocac.media@gmail.com.

We accept submissions in both English and French.

  • English-language submissions will be initially edited by Dr. Christine Faucher.
  • French-language submissions will be initially edited by Dr. Aime Avolonto.

Following this initial editorial review, accepted submissions will undergo one additional peer review before publication.

The BIPOCAC Chronicle recognizes that some conversations cannot wait. When current events are unfolding, timely publication can be essential to ensuring that important perspectives are heard while they are still relevant.

Our expedited editorial process is designed to reduce unnecessary delays between submission and publication, while maintaining a meaningful peer-review process. This allows impactful contributions to reach readers when they can have the greatest relevance and impact.

BIPOCAC is committed to supporting the next generation of academics and higher education stakeholders in making greater demands for racial equity in academia.

We encourage you to contribute your voice to this conversation.
